"[T]his year I've seen some totally out-there products that take buyers for fools. If there's one lesson 2009 should have taught us, it's never again, yet looking around I can see this isn't necessarily the case. Watchmaking, like banking, is prepared to go back to the same old ways that hastened its fall. It bothers me to see contractors in dire financial straits."

Each has deliciously simple dials that ooze style and restrained masculine good taste. My top pick if the Vintage BR Heritage 123 Carbon. Amazingly comfy and bold dial that to me feels like a fresh alternative to many Panerai watches. Just a simple thing like putting the watch in a round case did so much. Note the vintage style curved edge sapphire crystal. The combo of the matte black light, tan colored leather is excellent.

Now luxury brand Urwerk offers a new comic strip (see below to check it out). I think the idea is brilliant. Why has it taken until modern times to do this? Because stuffy people in luxury watch company's were afraid of diluting the "prestige" of their brands with dirty comic book. Psh... what is this? 1986? Comic art has defined  much of the last generation. What do you think rich people under 35 are going to associate with more positively. Cool graphic novel imagery for a new watch, or sponsoring a polo tournament?

You'll find that despite the complexity of the techie looking dial, the time is really easy to read through the proper windows. The tread with the seconds indicators on it is constantly moving horizontally on the lower dial. It makes a noise that sounds like a bionic quartz watch. To make a smaller watch with less power consumption, Devon is also working on a Tread 2 model that only shows the hours and minutes. No release or schedule for completion has been set for the Tread 2 however.

Brand new from Dievas is this Classic Blue (also in black as the Classico Blue Professional). A dive watch with a rugged spirit and a designer face, the Classico Blue has a unique design meant to appeal to guys all over the world. Dievas watches always revolve around a diving watch theme. Their last new release was the Vortex, a really great watch that combined the looks of a diver and an aviator. This time, Dievas has gone back into diving watch territory in an inauspicious looking fashion diver that is still up to the task of diving deep. In a 44mm wide steel case with a 5.5mm thick sapphire crystal, the Classico Blue is water resistant to 1000 meters. Perhaps there will be later models with other dial trim colors. So there might be a Classico  Black, Red, Orange, etc.. Who knows.

In addition to selling watches to the public via Westime, John is a distributor. The idea is simple, but John proves this end of the business to be the most complex — though likely his favorite. Distribution involves investing in a brand and representing them in a particular market. By becoming a distributor, John will control the brand in the US, as well as other markets depending on the deal. Anyone who wants to sell the brand must go through John. It is a fantastic way to slash and burn the competition when it comes to hot brands. You could say that John got lucky with Richard Mille — a hot new ultra-luxury sport watch brand. With few watches that retail under ,000 you’d think the market for such timepieces is small. The success of the brand is soaring and John likely picked up the rights from the start. Sometimes referred to as “the nose,” John has the legendary reputation for picking out viable newcomers and making them big. Of course I asked what the takes into consideration when gambling with new brands. His answer is simple — the watchmaker means more than the product. He explains that you can reform a bad product into something great, but even a good design won’t last if the watchmaker is lacking in the qualities necessary for success.

Patton P42 Hyperbare Watch Watch Releases

The ongoing stream of retro watch re-releases continues. The culprit this time is Eterna - the brand who makes all the Porsche Design watches (these days). Back with a vengeance, this watch is really suited to driving around in your DMC DeLorean. Now there is a item begging for a proper release! I  heard that a company in Texas bought the rights to the DeLorean name. They make money refitting older ones to actually kick-ass levels (better than original even - in terms of performance, engine, etc...). Plus, they are supposedly working on a new model! Tell me that this new Porsche Design Heritage P6530 watch doesn't belong in bed with a DeLorean? A match made in heaven. I think we need more stainless steel cars without paint. I mean we have it on blenders and refrigerators, why not on cars again?

The caseback has a respectful looking Tutima logo that adds to the heritage feel of the case. Tutima is mostly a classic aviator watch brand, but they do dive watches properly. As straight forward as the DI 300 looks, it is "sexy" for most German dive watch standards. I personally like this watch a great deal. It is comfortable to wear, easy on the eyes, and highly reliable as a legible timepiece. The black and yellow dial is one of the best that Tutima has released for this collection in my opinion, but there are a number of other color versions (and another dial choice that you might be interested in. This specific model is know as the DI 300 SE Ref. 629-08.

Ernst Benz John Varvatos Chronoscope Limited Edition Watch Hands-On Hands-On

We all knew it was coming. First there was the new Aquaracer (called the Aquaracer 500M because it didn't actually totally replace the more basic Aquaracer) and now there is the chronograph version. It looks pretty rad actually. Feeling very similar to a dive version of the new Carrera, this watch has a similar layout, but not the 1887 automatic chronograph. The Aquaracer 500M Automatic Chronograph has a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 that they refer to as the Calibre 16 movement.

Admittedly, these watches are not conventional and that’s what I love about them. They are conversation starters with character and style. As Castro makes less than 1000 pieces a year, you won’t find them on everybody’s wrist either.

The case is very interesting in design. Lots of nice organic curves. Pretty medium in size at just under 41mm in width. Available in white or rose gold, and in platinum. A few dial colors are available as well. It looks great in all of them in my opinion. Crystals are of course sapphire, and the case is water resistant to 30 meters. The straps are alligator. While the price for the platinum version is more, the H. Moser & Cie Perpetual 1 watch costs about 22,000 euros. Really going to be a winner for lots of people. And now a few years after its release, some of the apparent technical issues have been more or less smoothed out. I look forward to checking one out.

The unique manually wound HMC341  movement has a power reserve of 7 days, a power reserve indicator on the dial, and a perpetual calendar. Have you ever seen a more neatly integrated perpetual calendar mechanism before? Plus, the perpetual calendar is really complex because it can be set forwards and backwards. I also think that you have no mechanical penalties for adjusting the calendar anytime of day. The beautifully designed face has two large leaf-shaped hands and a smaller center arrow hand. That smaller hand is a month indicator (using the hours markers to indicate the 12 months). Then you have a power reserve indicator balanced out by the date on the opposite end. While the date is not a "big date," the disc has larger font so it looks like one almost. Then you have a large subsidiary seconds dial on the face. Just marvelous. On the rear of the watch you have a leap year indicator on the movement. That is it, how cool? A fully functional perpetual calendar that is barely noticeable.

AskMen.com wanted me to come up with a list of "top 10 graduation watches." This wasn't easy, but I do know that a good graduation watches should be conservative, tasteful, perfect for the first job interview, and also be a sentimental item you can keep for a long time. So I can up with list of mid to entry level luxury watches for most budgets. Timeless watches that he will appreciate as a new grad and years down the road.
